THE COMMUNITY PLAYERS OF CONCORD, NH, CHILDREN’S THEATRE PROJECT

ANNOUNCE AUDITIONS FOR

SOMETHING ROTTEN! JR.

May 31st, 12:00 – 6:00 pm; June 1st, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm
By Appointment

The Children’s Theatre Project will present its annual show at the Concord City Auditorium on the weekend of October 17 and 18, 2025 with a very special show to celebrate CTP’s 30th Anniversary  – Something Rotten! JR.

Auditions for young actors will be held by appointment on Saturday May 31st, 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm, and Sunday June 1st, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, at the Community Players of Concord Studio, 435 Josiah Bartlett Road, Concord.  Actors ages 13-18 will be invited to audition for principal roles, while those ages 10 -12 will be considered for ensemble roles. Chorus opportunities may be available for actors ages 8 and 9.  Cast list will be announced in early June and rehearsals will begin at the end of the summer, usually at some point during the last one or two weeks of August.  Rehearsals will be held two evenings a week and Sunday afternoons, followed by a show week leading up to performance weekend on October 17 and 18. Further details will be available here soon!

Something Rotten! JR. will allow you to travel back to the Renaissance for an hour of musical comedy gold. It was adapted from the Broadway hit that Time Out New York hailed as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years,” Something Rotten! JR. celebrates one undeniable truth: “nothing’s as amazing as a musical!”

In the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Something Rotten! JR. features large song and dance numbers, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters, each with their own moment to shine. Don’t miss your chance to be a part of bringing this history-twisting tale to the stage!

Cast Descriptions and Audition Vocals

Roles for Youth Actors ages 13 to 18

The Minstrel – Male or Female

The main soloist in the show’s opening number, “Welcome to the Renaissance”. Joins the Ensemble for the rest of the show.

Vocal Audition: “Welcome to the Renaissance”

Brother Jeremiah – Male

A Puritan, and Portia’s father, he sees sin wherever he looks and does not approve of theater – especially Nick and Nigel’s Troupe.

Vocal Audition: “We See the Light”

Portia – Female

A Puritan, and Brother Jeremiah’s daughter, she is passionate about poetry even though she isn’t technically allowed to read it. She is a sweet and intelligent young lady.

Vocal Audition: “I Love the Way”

William Shakespeare – Male

The most famous playwright in Tudor England! Though extremely successful, he’s always on the lookout for inspiration, which sometimes includes…borrowing…ideas from others! This character has a huge stage presence and a rock star persona.

Vocal Audition: “Will Power”

Nick Bottom – Male

A struggling playwright, he dreams of having a career like Shakespeare’s. Though Nick is artistically frustrated and stressed about leading the Troupe, he means well, even if his actions aren’t always exactly ethical.

Vocal Audition: “Nick Bottom’s Gonna Be on Top”

Nigel Bottom – Male

Nick’s sweet younger brother, who lacks the confidence he needs to write until he falls in love with Portia. Inspired by her confidence in him, he writes verses worthy of Shakespeare!

Vocal Audition: “Man, I Hate Shakespeare” (measures 25 – 39)

Bea – Female

She is married to Nick and loves him in spite of his lack of success in the theatre. She is very smart, resourceful, and always looks on the bright side of any situation. She wears lots of disguises throughout the show and has a big belting solo of her own!

Vocal Audition: “Right Hand Man”

The Troupe – Males & Females (who will dress as Males, since Females were not allowed to perform on stage in Tudor England!)

Includes characters Peter Quince, Robin Starveling, Tom Snout, Francis Flute and Snug. There may be more than these five Troupe members cast. These are fun character parts who sing as a group.

Vocal Audition: “Welcome to the Renaissance”

Lord Clapham – Male (or Lady Clapham – Female)

He/She is a posh patron of the theatre who abandons the Troupe as their patron once they cross Brother Jeremiah.

Vocal Audition: “Nick Bottom’s Gonna Be on Top”

Shylock – Male

He is banned from any profession except moneylending, but theatre is his true love, and he wants nothing more than to become the Troupe’s patron.

Vocal Audition: “Nick Bottom’s Gonna Be on Top”

Nostradamus – Female

Not THE Nostradamus, but his niece, Nancy! She can see the future, although with varying degrees of accuracy. Her predictions, for better or worse, lead the Troupe to produce their very first musical. Nostradamus is the lead singer in the big production number, “A Musical”.

Vocal Audition: “A Musical”
